Editor’s Letter:
I was wandering down a quiet laneway in Athens, Greece, belly full, European-Summer-Smug, no rush, just browsing, when I stumbled into a little shop. With that first step, eyes-wide-open, I inhaled sharply. Magazines. My heart began racing. Magazines, books, zines, essays, art prints, postcards, tote bags, all manner of printed beauty filled the space, lining the walls and waiting for – coaxing – me to pick them up. A siren song only I could hear, calling to me to touch them, hold them, keep them. I felt lit up and giddy. I was in cliché heaven, ‘kid in a candy store’ etc., and a frenzy took over. It was like I’d never seen a magazine or art book before. I grabbed and held and flipped and smiled. I had forgotten the pure joy, the absolute pleasure, experienced from finding a magazine you’ve longed for and finally getting to hold it.
In that moment I knew – it was time for Moi to go to print. How could we continue making a magazine about pleasure without delivering this final exquisite moment, this delicious add-on to the sweet published world we have created? So now we add a layer of sensory pleasure to the Moi experience, in full colour printed glory. What a truly divine pleasure, holding a favourite magazine in hand – opening up a spread with a gentle stroke; salivating over the beauty of the printed page; burying your face in close to enjoy a little sniff; or simply losing yourself to stories crafted to engage. A pleasure enjoyed slowly, sweetly, solo – time for yourself.
In the pages of our very first printed issue, we are all about Vintage. We explore the evolution of the sex party, from keys in a bowl to modern curated connection; in The Pleasure Room, we see just how far we’ve come (pun intended) in the design of pleasure; Poppy King – THE ’90s Lipstick Queen – is back and shares her thoughts on the transformative power of lipstick; and, we holiday at The Sunseeker, where pleasure is a full sensory experience. Vintage is a feeling, something that represents the peak of its day, and I believe the act of print is one of those things – a vintage experience that is forever held dear in your heart.
